Paint Rock
Paint Rock, Alabama is a small community situated less than a half-hour southeast of Huntsville along Highway 72. Surrounded by lush wilderness and an abundance of parks along the Paint Rock River, Paint Rock is a tiny town with less than 200 residents in total. The history of Paint Rock dates back to the early 19th Century when the area was established as a railroad town offering an inn and Post Office. By the late 19th Century, Paint Rock had several mills and was a haven for agriculture. Incorporated in 1894, Paint Rock has seen its fair share of chaos and devastation. During the early 20th Century, a deadly tornado ripped through the area damaging or destroying most of the buildings and homes, and causing the once thriving town to shrink in size. Today, the tiny community remains a testament to the settlement days of the past with many reminders of yesteryear mingled with modern day buildings and conveniences. The still largely rural area relies on nearby Huntsville and surrounding areas for conveniences like shopping, dining, and lodging.
