Elk Falls
In his work Exploring Kansas, Mil Penner brags, “Elk Falls is a state of mind … There's nothing like it anywhere.” Nestled in the heart of the Ozarks, Elk Falls, Kansas, began as a mid-19th century settlement and remains as a quiet, secluded part of the state, with a modest population of less than 200 people. The people of Elk Falls refer to the town as the “world's largest living ghost town” in hopes of luring new residents. Though controversial, this claim was made at an opportune time, when Elk Falls was in dire need of revival. Artists and craftsmen began to flock to the small community and have helped to breathe new life into it. Potters and tanners have found a home in Elk Falls and are inspired by the natural surroundings. Elk Falls attracts thousands of visitors each year for its history and eccentric attractions. It even refers to itself as the “Outhouse capital of Kansas.”
