Southaven is one of the cities within DeSoto County, Mississippi. It is nicknamed S'Haven as well as “The Top of Mississippi” because of its location along the state's border with Tennessee. In fact, despite being located in Mississippi, Southaven is actually considered a suburb of Memphis, TN. Interstate 69 runs through the middle of the city from north to south, providing access to surrounding areas of both states. U.S. Route 51 also runs north to south through the area, providing even more transportation.
Southaven, MS has a population of just under 50,000 people living in around 34 square miles. The city is surrounded by Olive Branch, MS; Horn Lake, MS; Hernando, MS; and Memphis, TN. Although not an incredibly well-known city, Southaven has the claim to fame of being the home of John Grisham in his youth.
There are many opportunities for education in Southaven and students in the area attend one of the schools in the DeSoto County School District including Southaven High School. There are also several private schools in the city as well as two schools of higher education. Southaven is home to the Northwest Mississippi Community College and the University of Mississippi.
