Saint Clair Shores
Thirteen miles north of Detroit, Michigan, St. Clair Shores is part of the Detroit Metro area. The city has a total area of 14 square miles. Perhaps the most interesting feature of St. Clair Shores is the 14 miles of canals that weave their way on the Nautical Mile. A magnet for restaurant and retail establishments, the Nautical Mile is a portion of Jefferson Avenue between Nine Mile and 10 Mile roads that is quite popular with both locals and tourists.
The town’s name gives away the nationality of the first European settlers in the region, the French. It is named after Lake St. Clair, from which the town sits directly west. If you visited St. Clair 90 years ago, and had the courage, you would have taken a ride on America’s Longest Coaster at Jefferson Beach. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the amusement park, and today the area is an attractive Marina. The Marina boasts the highest number of boat registrations per capita in the U.S. If you time your visit right, you may enjoy the Port Huron-to-Mackinac Sailboat Race, which is held every year.
