Port Salerno
The community of Port Solerno, Florida is located on the southeastern coast of Florida in Martin County. Port Solerno has a population around 10,000 individuals and covers a land area of only 4 square miles. The area was first founded as a small settlement during the 1920s, named after the home city of the Italian emigrants who came to live in the area. After World War II, the Port Solerno area became more and more popular, particularly as people living in the northern states moved south. Today, Port Solerno is known for hosting the World Fishing Tournaments.
Though the town of Port Solerno only covers about 4 square miles, the greater Martin County area spans about 752 square miles and has a population of over 146,000 individuals. The county was founded in 1925 from parts of two existing counties - St. Lucie County in the north and Palm Beach County in the south. In addition to hosting annual fishing tournaments and festivals, Martin County is also known for containing the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge. You will also find a number of locations listed on the National Register of Historic Places within the county including the Olympia School, Dickinson State Park, Lyric Theatre, and the Burn Brae Plantation-Krueger House.
