Isabella
Isabella is a tiny unincorporated community in the Stoney River township of Lake County, Minnesota, in the north-east corner of the state. It is located 27 miles north of Silver Bay, MN, at the intersection of Minnesota State Highway 1 and Forest Road 172. Isabella is situated the middle of the Superior National Forest, and Lake Superior is about 10 miles east; the Canadian border is 20 miles to the north; and the nearest big city is Duluth, MN, about 20 miles south. The nearest town is Finland, MN, directly south and its name reflects the fact that many early settlers in Minnesota were from Finland. Isabella is Minnesota's highest community, at 2000 feet above sea level. It's also one of Minnesota's most independent communities, as there are only two highways and two railroads before you reach the North Pole. Isabella's beautiful forest setting, the many nearby lakes and streams, and large wildlife population in the area make this a popular place for nature lovers, bird-watchers, outdoor enthusiasts, and photographers.
