Mount Pleasant
Located in Central Michigan, Mount Pleasant houses the main campus of Central Michigan University. Settlement started in the area only after the Graduation Act, 1854, which allowed white settlers to buy land from the government at discounted rates. The initial settlement at Mount Pleasant included Native American Ojibwas from Swan Creek, Saginaw, and Black River, who were relocated to the area in the county known as the Isabella Indian Reservation. The Homestead Act, 1862, was when non-native residents moved to Mount Pleasant. The city seal, with an image of the oil drill, showcases a major local historic event: the discovery of oil in the area in 1928.
