Shrewsbury
A small town of approximately a thousand people in Rutland County, Vermont, Shrewsbury is a sleepy New England town with a molasses-slow vibe and very little going on in town. There are several local businesses in town, some of which are a big part of the local flavor, but the vast majority of the town’s residents work in nearby cities, particularly the city of Rutland a few miles away.
Shrewsbury Center houses the town meetinghouse, where there are cultural events like a talent show and contra dances, as well as serves as the meeting place for the community church. The town’s rural, settled nature means the crime rate is extremely low. There hasn’t been a single homicide inside the town of Shrewsbury since the late 19th century.
The local atmosphere is a little reserved, as is typical for many New England towns. Don’t take it personally, however – if you treat the locals with respect, they’ll do the same for you, and you’ll find that those who work in the restaurants and hotels are friendlier than your average New England Yankee.
