Haverhill
Situated on the shores of the Merrimack River, Haverhill, Massachusetts is a beautiful city with a rich history and vibrant culture. The area where Haverhill sits was bought from Pentucket Indians as far back as the 1640's around the time the area was incorporated in 1641. The City of Haverhill was not incorporated, however, until 1870. At its roots, Haverhill was a farming community with gristmills and sawmills springing up toward the 18th and 19th Centuries. During the early 20th Century, Haverhill was noted as being the city that produced a tenth of all the shoes manufactured in the United States. Later in the 20th Century, large efforts to revitalize and restore much of the historic architecture in Haverhill failed and resulted in the demolition of much of the four-century old architecture. In more recent years, efforts to restore have once again taken wing, with many older buildings being renovated and repurposed, rather than being demolished.Today, Haverhill is an eclectic mixture between history and innovation. Old factories have been converted into chic loft apartments, and downtown areas are being revitalized. George Washington once touted Haverhill as being one of the most beautiful villages in the land, and today, many still concur. With so much history, beauty, and well developed business and educational institutions, Haverhill is a perfect place for those looking for a historical getaway, or those looking to settle down to a quieter pace of life.
