Gas
The small town of Gas, Kansas was established in the late 19th Century after an abundance of natural gas was discovered in the area. Originally named Gas City, by the early 1900's the town was bustling and manufacturing was increasing. With less than 600 residents, Gas has half the population it did in 1910. The primary reason for the decline is that the natural gas supply that once built the city finally depleted. Today, Gas is home to largely residential areas with a few smaller commercial spaces. Natural gas is no longer the primary source of income for the area, and manufacturing has dwindled in recent years. Situated just a short drive west on highway 54 from Iola, Gas is convenient to many modern day amenities while maintaining a quiet, family-friendly, small-town vibe.
