Mechanicsburg
Located in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, and just a short drive west of Harrisburg, Mechanicsburg was settled by European-Americans in 1806. Covering just a small 2.6 square miles, the Appalachian Trail passes through the area, and the town was incorporated in 1828. Home to the Jubilee Day street fair, and Irving Female College, Mechanicsburg was named for the mechanics that restored and crafted Conestoga Wagons in the area during the 19th century. An early farming town, Mechanicsburg's industry grew with the establishment of the Cumberland Valley Railroad, and the town played a pivotal role in the transport of goods to troops during the American Civil War. Found nestled beyond the western portion of the Susquehana River, Mechanicsburg offers small town charms on the edge of Pennsylvania's capital city.
