Polaris
The area of Polaris, Montana is an unincorporated community located in Beaverhead County, MT. This community most well-known for being the location of the Maverick Mountain Ski Area. Polaris is home to only about 100 permanent residents while the greater Beaverhead County area has a population of nearly 10,000. Beaverhead County is the largest county in Montana, covering a total of 5,572 square miles. The county was named for a rock formation that was described by the Shoshone tribe as being shaped like the head of a beaver.
Polaris, MT, and the surrounding Beaverhead County area, is rich with local history. In fact, Beaverhead County alone is home to nearly 20 locations on the National Register of Historic Places. Some of the places on the list include Bannack Historic District, Big Hole National Battlefield, Clark's Lookout, and the Oregon Short Line Passenger Depot.
