Altamont
Altamont is a community with approximately 200 residents that is located in Daviess County, northwestern Missouri. The name of the town (which translates to “high mountain”) comes from the elevation of 1,002 feet measured at the local train depot. The greater area is known for its importance to the development of the Mormon Church in the 1830s, the role it played in relation to the James-Younger Gang from the 1860s to the 1880s, and its large Amish population.
