Hempstead
One of three towns in Nassau County, New York, Hempstead is located in the Southwest portion of the county. The town makes up the majority population of the county and out of the towns in New York, it has the most people. In fact, the population density of the town is greater than that of Columbus, Ohio and Fort Worth, Texas. A town with a rich history, it was settled around 1644 as a result of a treaty between English colonists and the Native Americans that populated that part of New York. The name Hempstead is derived from the name of Dutch town Heemstede and today is a largely Republican area. Geographically, it covers about 200 square miles, although about 72 of those are water. It is the site of the most famous beach on the east coast, known as Jones Beach, which receives about 6 million visitors annually.
