Fort Meade

A historic settlement that was first established by US Army elements of the 7th Calvary in 1877, Fort Meade, South Dakota has for over the past 120 years been home to some type of official military presence. There is a rich history in Fort Meade, as what was left of the 7th Calvary stayed in this area after the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876. To this day, it serves as a training grounds for the Army National Guard Officer Candidate School. It also serves the same purpose for the South Dakota National Guard. So you can be sure there is always a military presence in town. Today, Fort Meade has quarters that can house a regiment of ten full cavalry troops. It is also home to to two hospitals, where many of the locals work. It is also home to a museum that chronicles the rich history of this region of the state. It is just east of the town of Sturgis, and many of the festivities involved with the annual Sturgis Rally, that attracts thousands of bikers from all over the country spill over to Fort Meade.
