Slater
Slater is a tiny community in the state of Colorado. Strangely, the only highway into town is the Wyoming Highway 70 that juts south for a handful of miles through this cattle ranching town, before swinging north again. Aside from cows though, you won’t find much here. The Routt National Forest is close by though and the cities of Craig and Clark have more to offer. In fact, Craig has one of the largest elk herds in North America. It’s the “Elk Hunting Capital of the World” with a population of more than 9,000 residents in Moffat County. Once home to the rowdy outlaws known as the Wild Bunch, things were pretty rough here during the Old West. But today you can learn about the history of gunfighters and cowboys, while experiencing a little of what life was like on the “open range.”
