Highland Springs
Highland Springs is a small, census-designated place inside Henrico County. It is located near the central western part of Virginia. The city was founded in the 1980's by Edmund Sewell Read as a streetcar suburb. The natural springs in the area made it a suitable place to live and offered inspiration for its name. When the area was created, Read purchased 1,000 acres and divided them based off of the pre-existing central road. The streets were named in alphabetical order in honor of plants. The naming began at the western part of the lot with Ash Street and continued through Spruce Street. The main road was named after the founded. The original Read brick home is a medical office complex, but is still there today. Today it has a population of 15,711 residents spanning a total land area of 8.3 square miles. There are 5,788 households and 4,132 families living in the area. The average income for the city is $39,000. The city has no physical traces of a railway line, but it actually was, and when you drive along U.S. Route 60, you will notice that the street configurations are unusual. This is credited to the turning path that the old street trolleys once took.
