Charleston
One of the best kept secrets in the historic and beautiful city of Charleston, South Carolina, James Island is a major tourist attraction with many full-time residents. The island has a history of its own, as it is home to a former Confederate installation, Fort Pemberton. There is also a former cotton plantation here, McLeod Plantation, and it is now the property of the parks and recreation department of the city. There is also a public boat ramp here, a playground, a municipal golf course, and some of the streets here are lined with oak trees that are over 100 years old.
This is a resort community with luxury condominiums, and single-family homes. Some of the homes are modest, while others are most definitely upscale with oceanfront views. The people here are friendly, and this is a low crime, safe place to live, with a number of things to do year round. It is home to about 11,000 residents, most of whom enjoy a high quality of life.
