Brownsville
The city of Brownsville, Texas is the southernmost city in the state with a population of 180,000. It is located right on the border with Mexico across from its sister city of Matamoros. This urban area is one of the fastest growing in the nation. This area is also rich in history as many battles from the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, and the Mexican Revolution were fought here.
People love the mild climate, and the cost of living here is among the lowest in the nation. Brownsville is home to many institutes of higher learning, including the University of Texas at Brownsville, Texas Southmost College, and The University of Texas Health Science Center. There is plenty of nightlife for the college-age crowd and adults here that range from tame to rowdy and raucous fun across the border in Matamoros.
Being a border town, there are criminal elements present here, but overall, it is a safe place to live and work. If you do venture across the border to party, make sure you are part of a large group and stay together for your safety.
