Saint Charles
St. Charles, Minnesota is a city located in the southeast region of the state. Situated in Winona County, Minnesota, St. Charles is known as the ‘Gateway to Whitewater State Park’. St. Charles has an annual city festival Gladiolus Days; it is always held the weekend before Labor Day in August. The town honors the late Charles Fischer, who developed many varieties of that flower, and who was also a local resident that made this community known as the Gladiolus Capitol of the World. Winona County is named after a legend of a Dakota woman who was promised to marry a man she did not love, so she is said to have leapt to her death at a place that is now called Maiden’s Rock. Rochester, Minnesota is located 21 miles west of St. Charles and this is the home of the Mayo Clinic.
