Butte Des Morts

The Butte des Morts is a tiny unincorporated census-designated place in the area of Winneconne, Wisconsin. With a population of over 950 people, it's on the north bank of the Lake Butte des Morts. The name means “hill of the dead” in French and it's set on less than one square mile of area. The Austin Grignon Hotel is in the city limits and is on the National Register of Historic Places, but there isn't much more to see in this quaint spot. For city life, try the closest city of Oshkosh on Lake Winnebago. It's named after the Menominee chief and its motto is “on the water.” Once a fur trading post, then it was populated by saw mills, which is where it gets its nickname, Sawdust City. Now the city has more than 66,000 people and has the third largest university in the state, the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh. With more than 14,000 students to entertain, the city is lively with a number of shops, restaurants, and attractions.
