Spartanburg
Spartanburg is located within Spartanburg County, South Carolina and is actually the county seat of this area. The city's municipal population is around 37,000 with a total urban population of 180,750 making it the sixth largest of the state's cities based on population. In fact, the Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area includes Spartanburg County as well as Union County and has an even larger population of about 317,000. The area of the city is just over 19 square miles and this is the area in which the city population of 37,000 residents lives.
The city is still home to a range of natural features that give a glimpse into Spartanburg's history as a hunting ground for the Cherokee and Catawba. These include Lawson's Fork Creek and Cottonwood Trail.
In recent years, the city of Spartanburg has begun revitalization efforts to boost their economy. It is now home to several major headquarters including Denny's restaurants, QS/1 Data Systems, Milliken & Company, and Advance America. Although not within the city limits, there is a BMW manufacturing facility within Spartanburg County which also boosts the city's economy.
While a portion of Spartanburg is a business center, it is also a college town. There are multiple different schools of higher learning within the city including the University of South Carolina Upstate, Converse College, Sherman College of Chiropractic, Spartanburg Methodist College, Spartanburg Community College, Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, Virginia College, and Wofford College.
