Portland
Neither a city nor a town, Portland, Ohio is an unincorporated community located in Lebanon Township, OH. The community lies directly on the Ohio River along the southeastern border of Ohio. Portland has a population under 600 while the greater Lebanon Township area has a population closer to 1,000. Lebanon Township is located in Meigs County, OH which covers a land area of about 430 square miles and has a population of nearly 24,000 people. Meigs County was named for Return J. Meigs, Jr., the fourth Governor of Ohio.
While Portland, OH may not be a big city, there is definitely a lot to see and experience in the area. Meigs County alone is home to nine locations on the National Register of Historic Places including Buffington Island, the Meigs County Fairgrounds, and the John Downing, Jr., House in Middleport. In addition to its history, the Portland area has been home to several notable residents including Mike Bartrum, an NFL long snapper/tight end, American journalist Ambrose Bierce, and American sports broadcaster David L. Diles. Meigs County also contains several protected areas including Forked Run State Park and Shade River State Forest.
