Batesland is located along the eastern edge of South Dakota's Shannon County. The town is tiny - less than one tenth of a square mile, but is home to roughly 100 residents. Batesland was formed nearly 100 years ago, and has remained small throughout its history. Most of the residents are young, middle class families who appreciate the rural living and the rock bottom housing prices. American Indian residents make up most of the population. The town has its own elementary school and participates in the Shannon Country Virtual High School.
