Elsmore is a small city located in Allen County, specifically the southeastern portion of it, within Kansas. Originally the town of Elsmore was farther to the west, closer to Big Creek. However, in 1888 when the train route for the Missouri, Kansas & Texas R.R. was determined, a group purchased twenty acres in the town’s current location. This then became a population location for trading as well as shipping. Elsmore was incorporated in 1909 and by 1910 there was a post office, a bank, telegraph facilities, small manufacturers, and some good stores.
Elsmore has been relatively small throughout its history, but there has been some population decline when you look at the overall trend. In 1910 when the town was first starting, there were 216 residents. By the 1990 census this number went down to 91, then 73 by 2000. It did, however, go back up to 77 residents in 2010. As of 2010, these 77 residents included 22 families and 35 households.
In terms of location, Elsmore is about 15 miles to the southeast of Iola, which is the county seat of Allen County. It is also three miles north of Savonburg and nine miles south of Moran, which is slightly larger. The total land area of Elsmore is 0.15 square miles. Despite its small size, Elsmore is home to a local pub, a lawn mower repair shop, an auto repair shop, a cemetery, a Methodist Church, and a volunteer fire department.
