This small town on Highway 22 in the Santiam Pass is only four miles east of the town of Detroit. In 1903, the pass fell out of favor between many Indian tribes living in the area due to family feuds. The main two tribes are the Mollalas and the Cayuses, which were at one point the same tribe. The tribe had both believed that the spirits of fallen warriors had taken on, or rather entered the animals of the land. Many wolves, panthers, and bears made this route more dangerous, and therefore less favorable amongst the tribes and many of the other people living in the area.
