About 40,000 residents live on the Fort Bragg, North Carolina, United States Army installation. The residents of Fort Bragg can attend many outstanding colleges right on the installation. Campbell University offers a wide variety of courses on the base, but its main campus is located in Buies Creek, NC, about 49 miles northeast of the base. Excelsior College also offers classes on the base, in addition to offering college credit for activities that the soldiers may be doing away from the classroom. The main campus of Excelsior College is located at Albany, New York. Fayetteville State University also offers classes on the base, and students can also attend the campus that is located about 14 miles southeast. Fayetteville Technical Community College offers courses on and off campus, with many students able to earn technical certificates and associate degrees through this school. Students can earn their associate degrees in 51 different areas through Methodist University. Most classes occur in Fayetteville, NC, about eight miles away. Webster University offers a number of master degree programs on the base. The main campus for Webster University is located in Webster Groves, Missouri.
While the base and the nearby Pope Field are the largest employers in the area, many people also work for other employers in the area. The largest civilian employer is the Cumberland County Schools. Nearby Fayetteville is home to one of the largest Goodyear Tire and Rubber plants in the United States. Cape Fear Valley Health System offers employment at Cape Fear Medical Center, Highsmith-Rainey Specialty Hospital, Cape Fear Valley Rehabilitation Center, Behavioral Health Care, Bladen County Hospital, and several doctors' offices. Another large employer in town is Purolator, manufacturing oil filters and air filters.
