Once a stop on cattle drives to the north, Amistad, New Mexico, is a very small, unincorporated community that is part of Union County. It is located on New Mexico State Highway 402. In 1906, a Congregational minister promoted homesteading in this area, and that resulted in more than 40 ministers staking a claim here.
Today, Amistad has a US Post Office, a Methodist church, and several small businesses. This is a place for people who enjoy peace and quiet, brilliant night skies full of stars, and living in harmony with the area wildlife. It is also just south of a national forest.
