Binghamton
The city of Binghamton lies along the southern tier region of the state of New York, near the border of the neighboring state of Pennsylvania. The county seat of Broome County lies in a bowl-shaped valley at the juncture of the Chenango and Susquehanna rivers and earned the moniker “The Valley of Opportunity” during the early days of the railroad when Binghamton was a manufacturing center and transportation hub. Since the end of the Cold War, however, a large part of the manufacturing industry has died out, leaving only a handful of high-tech firms and an emerging education- and health care-focused city. As far as education, much of the driving force behind Binghamton's revitalization can be found at Binghamton University.
